Shade Grown Coffee and the Preservation of Migratory Birds

Destruction of Latin American rainforests threaten wildlife, including many bird species, that depend on these tree canopied habitats for survival.

According to Shade Grown Coffee - Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center - National Zoo| FONZ: "Shade grown coffee plantations play a key role in the conservation of migratory birds that have found a sanctuary in their forest-like environment."

Shade grown coffee plantations are preferred by conservationists because they maintain the forest-like environment because this same habitat is necessary for the production of shade grown coffee. Regrettably, other types of coffee production involve the destruction of the forest to enable the creation of open farm land suitable for full scale coffee production.

Additionally, shade grown coffee is "organic". Shade grown coffee production does not require the use of commercial fertilizers.

Please see the FAQ Page on the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center website to learn more about this critical issue. The Smithsonian site will even permit you to locate sellers of "Shade Grown Coffee" in your local area.
