Determining the Sex of Silverbills
(or Sexing Silverbill Finches)
This message was posted to the Finchlover Listserv on Tue 1/16/01 and chosen for archival because of the excellent quality of the information provided.

Question presented: There is one last challenge for me and that is the matter of the silverbills I have. Somehow I need to sex them.

Response: If you have Bengalese (Society Finches) and can sex those, Silverbills will be no problem. Cocks are very persistent singers, although it's a very subdued song, you will not have any bother deciding which birds are not hens, as to which birds are this provides the same problems as the Bengalese. My hens are egg machines, as soon as the days get longer and they pick up in condition they drop eggs everywhere, so sexing becomes easy.

There are no secret methods I know of to sex them, just observation, I have generally sexed all mine by the time they have exchanged their juvenile raiment's for adult garments, (after the first molt) with 99% accuracy, still have the odd one though who doesn't become musical until I pair it with another Cock bird :-(

All the Best, Jim
