Egg Candling

This message was posted to the Finchlover Listserv on and chosen for archival because of the excellent quality of the information provided.

From the onset of incubation it takes about three days before a blood ring is visible in a fertile egg.  By the fifth day with a good candling light infertiles can be identified.  Old eggs can be identified by their large air cells.  Learning to use a candling light and accurately read the eggs will allow you to thin very large clutches and improve the number of chicks that hatch.
