| QUARANTINE |
Quarantine is important, even for the casual finch owner.
The following paragraph sets forth my simple guidelines for quarantining new finches before introduction to my existing birds. It is a common sense approach and is not sophisticated. But, of course, I only have a few birds and am not a commercial breeder.
It is always recommended that when you introduce new birds in to you present population that you first quarantine the incoming birds to prevent the spread of disease to you uninfected flock. Generally, I separate and observe the newly introduced finches for at least 14 days. During this time, I do not expose my existing birds to the new ones and I am careful not to mix containers in a common area. Additionally, I clean my hands thoroughly to prevent any possible exposure.

As a New Pet states that, "Two or three weeks is the normal time span
for basic quarantine." p.8 He refers to the practice of
quarantine for newly acquired stock, "a golden rule of animal
husbandry" p.43.
