Todd saw one of these at a pet store and really liked the pattern on the finch. Have any of you had any experience with cherry finches? If so, please describe their behavior characteristics to me. Thanks

=Hi Kim. I breed cherry finches. I successfully bred 6 youngsters last summer. I bought more pairs of cherries, including some fawns which are gorgeous. The cherries are quite finches. They eat the scrambled egg food, mealworms, finch seed and greens that they can find in the aviary. They prefer to nest in ivy bushes or bushes in general but I have seen them build a nest in an old finch nest box. Hope this helps. Di

Cherry finches are great. Mine got along well with everyone. They would lay, sit, and hatch but would toss their chicks. On their last clutch, before I sold them to Di, they raised a clutch of three to around 13 days of age and then abandoned them.

Mine never built in a wicker or wooden box, but would build a free-standing. Once they built a nest in thickets of weeds that I hung in the corner of the aviary, and then in the outdoor aviary they built in a small cedar tree. I may have some pictures of them and their nests.

I would like to get more of them. Not too many people breed them, which I think is due to the lack of vibrant colors. I think their coloration makes a nice contrast when they're kept with brightly color finches.

We thought the cherry finch looked pretty near the owl finches at the pet store. They both have patterns, which Todd especially enjoys- more so than color. Figures, as he is a graphic designer. Do they have a particular sound? The owls have such a cool mewing sound!

Kim,

I don't believe that they all have the same song. The song of those that I had were unusual and I can't really explain it. In a mixed aviary, if you heard the song you would know who it was coming from.
