Reference Source: Finches and Sparrows by Peter Clement  indicates this bird as the "rarest species". (p.17). Apparently, the São Tomé Grosbeak was believed extinct, having not been sighted for over 100 years. However, this bird was seen twice, in 1991 and 1992. 

On Birdlife International's "Search for Species", The São Tomé Grosbeak is listed as an endangered species.
