Cassin's Finch

The Cassin's Finch was named for Philadelphia ornithologist John Cassin. Cassin, 1813 - 1869, was made honorary curator of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences in 1842. There are five species of western bird that bear his name.

Scientists Find Male Finches Frugal In Their Attempts To Attract Females: "Studying Cassin's finches, which breed in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, the scientists found that males sang the most in response to the loss of a prospective mate but sang very little either in the presence of a mate or when females were unlikely.
