MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:
I received the assistance of breeders over the internet when I had my first egg bound gouldian female. The female gouldian would sit at the bottom of the cage in an apparent weakened condition. They suggested that I purchase Neo-Calglucon (calcium glubionate), a human calcium supplement that is available at most drug stores (U.S.).
As a preventative measure, especially in immature females, I put a few drop in their water container when they have finished molting and are beginning to reproduce.
IN CASE OF EMERGENCY
If the situation worsens, and the female starts go to the bottom of the cage, I force her to drink Neo-Calglucon straight out of an eye dropper. The first time I used it, the egg came out in 5 or 10 minutes and the female recovered quickly.
Often, I place the female in small aquarium and place a damp towel over the top. Then I have a heat lamp above the towel that shines down on it. This causes two beneficial results: (1) increase the temperature help her to pass the egg; plus, (2) stream is created that provides humidity which is recommended for a sick bird.
